Art Residencies
Have you completed an Art Residency?
How did you apply?
Did you receive a grant?
I am currently working on a series of turtle paintings in support of the Reef HQ Turtle Hospital in Townsville, Queensland.
In order to complete these works I have been granted permission to use the beautiful turtle images of Brisbane photographer, Colin Davis, and Daintree Eco Tour company, Ocean Safari, as reference material in support of this great cause. I appreciate the time and dedication (not to mention expensive camera equipment) taken to achieve photographs of such a high standard.
I would dearly love to be able to spend time with the sea turtles in their natural environment.
Unfortunately it is rather expensive to stay on the islands which are inhabited by the turtles and, because I am not an accomplished snorkeler, it would mean my husband would need to come with me to assist with taking the photos.
I have been considering applying for either an art residency or a grant which will enable me to stay on the island, observe the turtles and obtain my own reference material.
What does an Art Residency involve? I know of a few artists who have completed residencies where they hold workshops as a requirement, while others complete an artwork to be retained by the organisation. Some provide accommodation and studio space, while others only provide the working space and you need to rent somewhere to stay.
My brother is completing a two-week residency at Patonga on the NSW Central Coast in a few weeks along with other artists. At the end of that time he is expected to be involved in an exhibition of works completed during the residency. I am interested to see how this goes and any advice he can give me at the end of his time there.
Have you ever completed a residency? If so, what advice would you give?
Westpac Rescue Helicopter
I will have two paintings included in a Charity Auction raising funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Services to be held at Belmont Golf Club at 6pm on 26 August 2016.
Art works for the Auction will be on display from 1 August in the south section of Ocean Blue Gallery, Belmont. Buyer registration forms will also be available at the Gallery.
Happy creating :)
